The Vital Spark Studio is located on the shore at Broadford Bay, on the Isle of Skye, in north-west Scotland.
Although Skye is geographically an island there is a spectacular (toll-free) bridge carrying the main A87 road to Skye from all points south & east. The nearest airport is Inverness, with train & coach connections to Skye. Train options include the famous “West Coast Line” from Inverness terminating at Kyle of Lochalsh (the Skye Bridge), or take the “West Highland Line” from Glasgow to Mallaig, and sail “over the sea to Skye” on the Skye Ferry – a 20 minute sailing.
Recent 2006/7 Clients include: Scottish Composer Blair Douglas (album for 2008), Scottish indie band "Injuns" (EP release); K.T. Tunstall (DVD & 10 tracks) with producer Steve Osborne; metal band "Capturie"; ex-Runrig front man Donnie Munro (album); Beachboys & Boy George producer Steve Levine (indie band); Mark Goodier (BBC Live feed Radio One). Gaelic College spoken voice learning modules; and numerous "spoken word" sessions.
Studio owner Chris Harley (aka “Chris Rainbow” in the 70s/80s) production & session work over the last 25 years includes projects recorded at: Abbey Road Studios (London); Jacobs Barn (Sussex); The Manor (Oxfordshire); Olympic Studios (London); Cava Studios (Glasgow); Castle Studios (Edinburgh).
Chris’s clients include “The Alan Parsons Project”, “Boy George”, “Camel”, Elaine Page, Jon Anderson, Japanese artist “Hotei” and many others.
In particular, Chris’s Scottish artists’ album production credits include 6 “Runrig” albums, “Wolfstone” (albums), Blair Douglas (albums), Donnie Munro (albums) and legendary duo “The River Detectives” (albums).
We can arrange accommodation close by, in all available styles, from comfortable & friendly B&B to four-star hotels. We can also arrange extra-curricular activities such as river or sea fishing, hill-walking, boat trips & general sightseeing.
Occasionally, publishers and record companies send their writer/artists up to Skye to write & record demos without the day-to-day distractions of urban studios – we induce a very productive & creative atmosphere;
